Last Day in Charlottesville

I thought I was in the clear.  I thought that we had run out of time to venture off to anymore presidential homes.  We were hitting the road in 36 hours... I was home free.  Or so I thought.  Matt found out that through the Army (thank you Uncle Sam) we could visit Monticello for free.  We had no excuse not to go (except for the impeding move, but that didn't seem big enough to keep Matt away)...

We had already been to the visitor center because we didn't think I'd be able to go through the house so when we arrived we went straight for the bus.  The bus treks you up a long, steep hill and drops you off in front of the house.  We walked through the gardens and checked out the views before starting the house tour.  I think the part about the house I liked the most was the library and patio.  I really like built-in shelves and the entire library was lined with them and some 6,500 books.  Yeesh, that's a lot of books.  Did you know that Jefferson died broke.  I bet it was because of his book obsession.  That's why I keep Matt out of Barnes and Noble.  You're welcome, Lawson.

Matt likes the dining room.  Why?  Because it's bright yellow.  Supposedly yellow was a super expensive color to make so it was painted yellow to impress the guests.  It also had wine dumb-waiters built into the fireplace so Jefferson could serve his guests himself.  Oh, and the skylights.  There's 13 in the entire house.  Matt loves him some skylight.

The outside was better than the other houses because there were flowers and activities to do.  For example, Matt learned how to write with a quill.  And Matt thinks he's awesome at quill-writing.

So as we are currently lying in a bed in South Carolina on our way from Virginia to Georgia, I don't have to live in regret that I missed visiting the home of my childhood hometown's namesake.  Go Sages!
